The bus ride home took an eternity. We bumped and we bruised, mostly from the metal bars sticking out of the seats. We did stop for lunch at a dam, which was cool and odd at the same time. This dam was off the beaten path, but apparently IJM staff rest there often when they drive out to this village. There’s a religious shrine overlooking the water and it was here that we spread out the palm leaves, filled out plates and scooped up traditional rice and chicken and shoved it in our mouths. We only used our right hands of course because in India, with your left you…ask me in person.
The night ended with a meal at a traditional western style restaurant. Spirits were high because one, we had met in person this amazing family, a living testament to the justice work done at IJM and two, there was good 'ole steak on the menu. With appetizers, drinks and steaks for 19 people, the bill was $120. Another reason to love India!
