Our next visit was to Destiny House, a business where rescued girls were taught to sew and embroider sarongs, purses, bags, etc. The girls were also taught English, fed, cared for and wholly loved. My favorite purchase was 7 Obama bracelets. Yep, I have Obama bracelets made by rescued girls in Kolkata.
We then went to another similar location where older women, former prostitutes, were also taught to stitch and weave and make exquisite throws and handbags. These goods are sold online. Email me if you want the web address. Each item has a tag sewn in it with the name of the woman who made it. The folks that run it are beyond the definition of courageous. They moved here from the states and live in Asia’s largest Red Light District. They walk the talk more than anyone I’ve ever seen. I can’t fathom the sacrifices they make daily and the courage they have to make this place their home. And then, to see the difference they are making in these women’s lives, giving them a trade, feeding them, providing them health care and a savings account…it’s beyond words.
